CATHAOIRLEACH TAKES LORD OF THE DANCE ROLE AT UKRAINIAN CELEBRATIONS
Co Council Cathaoirleach Seán Conlon found himself elected to the Lord of the Dance role when Monaghan’s new Ukrainian community celebrated their important Defenders Day holiday on Friday last November 14 with an event in the Teach na nDaoine Family Resource Centre to express appreciation to those who have helped them relocate following the Russian invasion of their country.
Guests were invited to don the colourful vinok ribbons for a gentle introduction to traditional Ukrainian folk dance. Borsch and other regional cuisine were on the menu and the achievements of Ukraine in culture and sport were proudly delineated during the proceedings, which were addressed by Cathaoirleach Conlon, Teach na nDaoine Co-ordinator Packie Kelly and Brendan Buckley of Monaghan Civil Defence, who provided the first point of contact for the over 40 Ukrainians relocated to the Monaghan area in April.
The message of Ukraine to Monaghan was one of heartfelt thanks. As their spokesperson put it: “We came here experiencing difficult times and found so warm a welcome and so many people were helping us with an open heart. We are very grateful for this and today we want to thank you for all your help and support.” See full story and more pictures by Rory Geary inside…
