BUSINESSES AFTER RISE IN SHOP THEFTS
Crimes figures for Co Monaghan were still significantly below pre- Covid-19 pandemic levels but there had been a significant recent increase in the number of thefts from retail premises in the county, Monday’s meeting of the county’s Joint Policing Committee was told. Garda Chief Superintendent Alan McGovern told the meeting that the Gardaí were currently discussing security measures at retail premises with business owners. He said that there could be a link between the rise in this form of crime and the current escalating cost of living. Statistics before the meeting indicated that the Gardaí had investigated 113 thefts from shops in 2022 to date, compared to 73 such incidents during the same period in 2021. There had been 12 thefts from motor vehicles in the 2022 period compared to 16 in 2021, while 110 instances of other forms of theft had been investigated this year, a reduction on the corresponding 2021 figure of 118.
