MAGILL JEWELLERS CELEBRATING 100 YEARS
Exactly 100 years ago an advertisement appeared on the front page of The Northern Standard to announce the opening of “The Waltham Watch Depot” in The Diamond, Monaghan. The notice was signed by Mr. Samuel Joseph Magill and his bold intention was to carry on a “High Class Jewellery Business” and to deliver a high standard of product and customer service. The fact that ten decades on, the jewellery business established by Samuel Magill at the heart of Monaghan, is celebrating a landmark occasion is testimony that the principles set down by its founder have not only been adhered to, but enhanced to suit the changing times over the years. Samuel Magill started his career as manager of The Watch Repair Dept. in Messrs. Jenkins of The Diamond and Church Square. When a premises at No. 6 The Diamond, previously occupied by another jewellers (Mr. Graham) became vacant in 1922, Samuel Magill decided it was time to branch out on his own and assumed ownership of the building. The attention to quality and service displayed in those initial advertisements of 1922 was reflected in Samuel Magill’s business practices, for he soon built up a very lucrative concern, into which his son Seamus came.
