MONAGHAN STRETCH OF ULSTER CANAL GREENWAY REOPENS AFTER IMPROVEMENT WORKS
It was a déjà vu experience for Sinn Féin councillor Seán Conlon when he returned in civic capacity for the reopening of the Ulster Canal Greenway near Old Cross Square on Friday last, August 12. Councillor Conlon remarked to those in attendance that he had the original honour in 2013 as County Cathaoirleach, partnered with former Councillor Paul McGeown in his capacity of Monaghan Town Council Cathaoirleach, in jointly officiating at the opening of the new Greenway at that time. Speaking to The Northern Standard, Councillor Conlon stated, “It is an exceptional experience to have been associated with both the original opening of the new Ulster Canal Greenway after its completion in 2013 as Co Council Cathaoirleach, accompanied by former Town Council Cathaoirleach Paul McGeown, and to return again as Co Cathaoirleach to view the substantial upgrade works that has transformed this section of the Greenway following considerable investment by Monaghan Co Council.
“At that time, the Greenway was a first in Co Monaghan, and over the last nine years has proven more than it’s worth in the finances invested, taxpayers’ money, in providing a safe recreational resource for all throughout our communities to enjoy. Since that time, walking and cycling along the multiple paths and trails that have since been developed has facilitated a phenomenal surge in people of all ages enjoying the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. “As with many developments that come of age, upgrades are never far off the agenda.
