TRANSFORMATIVE DAYS AHEAD FOR CLONES AS CONTRACT FOR KEY ULSTER CANAL PHASE SIGNED AND SEALED

The signing on Monday of the contract for the second phase of the redevelopment of the Ulster Canal marked the advent of transformative days for the town of Clones, Minister for Community and Rural Development Heather Humphreys TD declared. The Cavan/Monaghan TD was joined by Cabinet colleague Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage Darragh O’Brien TD at the Canal Stores to witnessing the signing ceremony that paves the way for the commencement in the coming weeks of work on the construction of a marina in the town and the delivery of tangible economic benefits from a flagship tourism project now about to heave into view as a realistic prospect after decades as a cherished dream.

The contract was signed in the presence of the two Ministers by Chief Executive of Waterways Ireland, John Mc- Donagh and Managing Director of Jons Civil Engineering Company Ltd, John Pentony. Waterways Ireland will manage the project, with Jons undertaking the work under the supervision of Doran Consulting. The brief, celebratory ceremony, watched by an audience of public representatives and canal campaigners, opened the door for site works next month to bring about the development of a new marina close to the Canal Stores building.
