The Do Not Consume notice that had been in place for the public water supply in Cootehill has now been lifted. Irish Water said the notice was issued to protect approximately 2,190 customers following elevated levels of manganese in the water supply. However, following consultations with the HSE and Cavan Co Council, the notice had now been lifted. “Irish Water acknowledges and understands the impact this Do Not Consume Notice had on the community of Cootehill and we sincerely regret the inconvenience,” Regional Operations lead Peter Gallagher stated.

“Our drinking water compliance and operational experts worked hard to resolve this issue as quickly and as safely as possible and we endeavoured to keep stakeholders updated at every stage of the process. “We are grateful to the media, elected representatives and members of the public who shared the information. We would also like to thank Cavan Co Council and HSE for their input and support throughout the process.”

All consumers on the Cootehill public water supply can now resume normal use of the water supply for drinking, food preparation and brushing teeth. Irish Water said it would continue to meet with the Water Liaison Group comprising local authority and HSE to review the monitoring and testing of the water supply in the town. The utiity advised customers in the area with queries to contact its 24/7 customer care helpline on 1800 278 278.
