ROAD TO HARPS COMPLEX RENAMED IN MEMORY OF BELOVED YOUNG FOOTBALL STAR

A poignant ceremony in the early evening sunshine of Friday last saw the road from Old Cross Square to the Monaghan Harps GFC complex in Monaghan Town renamed in memory of Brendan Óg ‘Ógie’ Ó Dufaigh, the Harps and county U-20 football star who lost his life in a road traffic accident at Clontibret a year previously, having led his Monaghan team to victory in an Ulster Championship semi-final only hours before.

The idea of renaming the roadway Slí Ógie Uí Dhufaigh was put in vogue by the Harps club and brought to formal fruition by the members and executive of the Monaghan Municipal District, whose Cathaoirleach Councillor Raymond Aughey formally declared the renamed thoroughfare open on Friday before a large gathering headed by Ógie’s parents and family members and comprised of many work, school, sporting and social acquaintances of an evidently deeply admired and beloved young man described in the aftermath of his passing by GAA…
