MONAGHAN TOWN RETURNS TO TOP 10 IN IBAL ANTI-LITTER LEAGUE

Significant progress has been recorded by Monaghan Town in the latest Anti-Litter League table published by the IBAL or Irish Businesses Against Litter organisation. The county capital is back in the top ten of the 40 Irish towns and cities which IBAL periodically assesses for litter control performance. Local Tidy Towns Chairperson Emer Brennan told the Northern Standard that Monaghan’s return to top ten status was very welcome. “It is a credit to all involved,” Ms Brennan stated, “including our Municipal District staff, our very supportive Environment Officer Sharon Finnegan, Community Employment Scheme staff and the volunteers who join organised litter picks.”

Ms Brennan also praised the role of the local Litter Vigilantes who, supplied with pickers, bags and hi-vis apparel, litterpicked in their own areas and in their own time. “This multi-faceted approach is needed but the unfortunate thing is that litter is entirely preventable and costs millions every year that could be spent on other needs,” the Tidy Towns Chairperson pointed out. “Our latest initiative, our community litter stands, allow people to take a litter-picker and bag from a dispenser and do a quick litter-pick.
