CLIMB WITH CHARLIE IN CO. MONAGHAN

Charlie Bird, accompanied by his wife Claire and his dog Tiger, showed his tenacity on April 2nd in reaching the top of Croagh Patrick in Co.Mayo and descending safely. A tremendous achievement by him, having been diagnosed last year with motor neurone disease. His nationwide project raised over €2 million in funds for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and the suicide prevention group Pieta. A huge thanks from Northern Standard reporter and Monaghan Lions Club President Michael Fisher to all who took part in the Rock Walk, Knockballyroney, enjoying the countryside near Bragan mountain.

Michael is a former colleague of Charlie in RTÉ News and had previously raised funds for the IMNDA with Dundrum Lions Club in support of another newsroom colleague, the late Colm Murray. Michael’s fundraising page reached a total of €1050, including some who donated offline (€275), which was double his initial target. Pictures of his walk were kindly provided by Gregory Murphy who covered the 6.5km along with the rest of the group and made a donation. Another member of Monaghan Lions Club, businessman Maurice Moffett from Ballinode, has raised over €45,000 for the same causes through his Climb with Charlie walk in Sliabh Beagh.
