NAMING OF CO MONAGHAN ESTATES SHOULD TAKE NEW COMMUNITIES INTO CONSIDERATION, CO COUNCIL TOLD

The practice of giving Irish language names only to new housing estate developments in Co Monaghan should be refrained from in the future in light of the significant proportion of the county’s population now drawn from other countries, it was stated at last week’s meeting of Monaghan Co Council. The Council was considering the terms of reference of its Coiste Logainmneacha or placenames committee.

Director of Services Cathal Flynn gave an outline of the agreed operating procedure of the committee as follows: “Developers will be required to submit to the Planning Section of Monaghan Co Council the name and numbering scheme for each proposed development, with reasons why the proposed name has been chosen. “Preference should be given to an Irish name with an English translation in italics. “The Planning Section will forward placename proposals to An Coiste Logainmneacha for consideration.
