GARDAÍ TAKING MEASURES TO ADDRESS INCREASE IN MONAGHAN BURGLARY INCIDENTS, JPC TOLD

Gardaí in Co Monaghan had increased mobile patrols and checkpoints and also heightened its social and local media security advice in the wake of an increased number of burglaries and robberies in recent times, Garda Chief Superintendent Alan McGovern told Tuesday’s meeting of the Co Monaghan Joint Policing Committee. Crime figures presented by Chief Superintendent McGovern to the meeting showed that there had been 26 burglary incidents detected in the county in 2022 to date, compared to a figure of 9 for the same period last year.

Assuring the meeting that the Gardaí’s detection rate for crimes in general was very high compared to other divisions in the region, the Chief Superintendent pointed out that a male person had been arrested in Carrickmacross on January 4 for an aggravated burglary in which a knife was produced. Referring to a number of recent break-ins in the Monaghan Town area, JPC community representative Alan Johnston said he had heard that some of the victims were in their homes when these incidents took place.

He asked if the Gardaí had any indication that these crimes were being carried out by people from outside the area, or whether they were being perpetrated by locals and were “one-off” incidents. Mr Johnston asked the Gardaí what the detection rates were for such crimes and whether the Gardaí had apprehended any of the individuals…
