Monaghan’s Co Councillors on Monday added their weight to the mounting opposition in the Border region to any triggering of Article 16 of the Northern Ireland Protocol by the British Government as part of its post-Brexit trade negotiation strategy with the EU. Fianna Fáil’s Seamus Coyle had a motion passed which asked the Council to fully endorse the position of the Irish Government and the EU in the Article 16 controversy.

The motion pointed to European Commission Vice President Marcos Šefčovič’s declaration that the Northern Ireland Protocol was the foundation of the entire Brexit withdrawal agreement and without it the whole system would collapse. Councillor Coyle said the consequences for Border communities of such a move meant that it would be “disastrous, irresponsible and reckless”. `He asked that the adopted motion be forwarded to Taoiseach Micheál Martin TD, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar TD, Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney TD, all party leaders in the….
