RING OF STEEL FOR POULTRY SECTOR AS THIRD MONAGHAN BIRD FLU CASE CONFIRMED

The Department of Agriculture yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon confirmed a third outbreak of Avian Influenza H5N1 in commercial poultry in Co Monaghan. The latest bird flu outbreak was detected in an egg-laying flock in the Castleblayney area. It follows the confirmation of an outbreak of the disease in a flock of broiler chickens in the Shantonagh area on Wednesday of last week, and the initial detection of the disease the previous Saturday in a 30,000- strong flock of turkeys, also in the south of the county. Depopulation measures have been implemented in both flocks.

A Department spokesperson told the Northern Standard yesterday that protection and surveillance zones around the three flocks in question had now been expanded to mitigate the spread of the disease. “This places additional controls on the movement of poultry and poultry products within…
