There will be free Christmas parking in Monaghan Town from Monday December 12 until Sunday January 2, it was announced at Monday’s meeting of the Monaghan Municipal District. Cathaoirleach David Maxwell said free parking would be available from noon until 6 pm in the town over the designated period. “We hope this will help the traders in the town and help the town over the Christmas period,” the Cathaoirleach stated. The Co-ordinator’s Report before the meeting stated that tenders had been received and evaluated for the erection and maintenance of the town’s Christmas lights and works would shortly commence. MEGA DRAW It was also reported to Monday’s meeting that the Retail Team of the Monaghan Town Team business promotion group had planned a Mega Draw for the run-up to the Christmas period with many local shops and businesses participating. Thousands of prizes were to be won and the draw was being promoted through the Northern Standard newspaper, Northern Sound radio and social media. The Co-ordinator’s Report stated that the purpose of the draw was to highlight business in the town and the offers and competitions they would be running on all media, and to drive the “stay local, shop local” message to customers past and present. “We ask all to support the effort by Monaghan Town Team,” the report stated. The meeting was also informed that promotions would be ongoing to encourage the public to spend their Monaghan Town Vouchers. “The Municipal District has preparations in place to issue the corporate sales for the Christmas period and companies are encouraged to order their vouchers early,” MD Co-ordinator Donal McElwain stated. The meeting was told that vouchers to the value of €293,250 had been sold in October, with sales to date in November €8,900. €32,080 in vouchers had been redeemed in October and the redemptions so far in November were to the value of €11,900.
