MONAGHAN GARDAÍ MAKE “LOCK UP, LIGHT UP” APPEAL AFTER SPATE OF BREAK-INS

Gardaí in Monaghan yesterday made an urgent “Lock Up, Light Up” appeal to householders after a spate of break-in and domestic robbery incidents in the Monaghan and Cavan areas in recent weeks. A Garda spokesman told the Northern Standard that the advent of darker evenings was apparently being availed of by opportunistic but well-organised thieves to steal cash and valuables from homes which were obviously unoccupied.

“We are asking people to make sure their homes are not left in darkness when they are out, particularly in the period when darkness starts to fall and they have not yet returned from work,” the spokesman stated. “Criminals are on the lookout for homes that are visibly unoccupied and in recent incidents in our own and neighbouring counties dwellings have been entered around these times and amounts of cash and jewellery taken.

“Homeowners should take steps to illuminate their homes when they are out and if they have an automated lighting system they should use it. We are also appealing to the public not to keep large sums of cash at home, and if they have jewellery at home they should ensure that they have a photographic…
