CLAN MCKENNA MARK 250TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF GENERAL DON JUAN MACKENNA, CO-LIBERATOR OF CHILE

Tuesday 26th October was the 250th anniversary of the birth of General Don Juan MacKenna who together with Bernardo O’Higgins is acclaimed as the co-liberator of Chile. To mark the occasion a wreath bearing the national colours of Ireland and Chile, was laid at his birthplace, Willville House Monaghan, by the Clan McKenna Chieftain, Peter McKenna, Swann’s Cross. Also, in attendance were the Clan McKenna committee members.

Don Juan or John was the son of William MacKenna and Eleanora O’Reilly. He left Willville at around the age of 12 years when he was taken to Spain by his uncle Count Alejandro O’Reilly who at the time was accomplished in the Spanish Army. In Spain he studied at the Royal School of Mathematics in Barcelona and in the Royal Military Academy for engineers and entered the Irish brigade of the Spanish Army which would eventually lead him to Chile where he founded the Corps of Military Engineers in the Chilean Army and…
