NEW PLAN TO MAXIMISE ECONOMIC AND WELLBEING POTENTIAL OF CO MONAGHAN WALKING AND CYCLING TRAILS

A strategy to maximise the potential of Co Monaghan’s network of walking and cycling trails from economic and wellbeing perspectives was presented to the members of Monaghan Co Council on Monday. As outlined by the Council’s Community Development Officer Carol Lambe, the County Walking and Cycling Strategy 2021-2026 will act as a blueprint for the future development of walking and cycling infrastructure throughout the county and “promote walking and cycling as activities which support the economic, cultural and social wellbeing of the people of Co Monaghan.”

The strategy also emphasises the positive impact on reducing Co Monaghan’s carbon footprint that greater participation in walking and cycling as an alternative to motor travel would have. The Council has formed a new Active Travel Unit to implement the strategy and are due to appoint a Rural Recreation Officer “to drive the development of recreational infrastructure”.

The holder of the new post would work with landowners and community groups to look at the development and maintenance of walks and trails, Ms Lambe told Monday’s meeting.
