Deputy Carthy stands over comments about Zappone appointment

Cavan Monaghan Sinn Féin Deputy Matt Carthy was at the centre of a major political row last week when he used Dáil privilege to accuse Higher Education Minister Simon Harris TD of leaking details to the media of the UN envoy appointment of Katherine Zappone from the July 28th Cabinet meeting. It came during a debate on a motion of confidence in Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney over his handling of the appointment. The government won the division by 92-59, a comfortable margin of 33 votes, with many Independents voting in favour. Minister Harris said the allegation was “totally untrue” and what happened was a misuse of Dáil privilege, which insulates a speaker from prosecution. The Higher Education Minister said he is strongly considering making a complaint to the Dáil’s oversight committee on privilege and procedure given Mr Carthy’s admission on radio that he has no evidence to support his allegation.
