Annyalla resident Maria Smyth has been crowned Ireland’s Strongest Woman under 64kg at the Irish Strongwoman Competition held in Derry last weekend Competitors from all over the Country descended on the Maiden City to compete in 3 weight categories; under 64kg, under 82kg and Open Category. Maria a member of Monaghan Strong Man and Strong Woman Club and who trains out of the Strength Shed in Smithboro participated in the under 64kg category.

The competition consisted of 5 gruelling feats of strength that tested the athletes to their maximum. Competing against other athletes from Kerry and Galway, Monaghan’s Maria began the competition with an impressive 12 reps on a 130KG deadlift, which is double her body weight, within 60 seconds. She followed this up with an impressive 7 over head reps on a 45 KG log, normally one of Maria’s weaker events. Highlight of the evet was how Maria performed 16 squat reps with….
