‘REVIEW’ OF NORTH SOUTH ELECTRICITY PROJECT REVEALED BY FIANNA FÁIL CAME 24 HOURS AFTER OVERHEAD LINE WAS ENDORSED AS GOVERNMENT POLICY

Following a meeting of the Fianna Fáil Parliamentary Party on 24th March, Monaghan Senator Robbie Gallagher revealed that in response to a question from him, An Taoiseach Micheál Martin had announced that a ‘review’ of the North South interconnector project would be instigated. However 24 hours earlier, the Minister for Climate and Green Party leader Eamon Ryan published details of how the project would proceed as an overhead line. It seems it was already decided by the time the Taoiseach made his commitment to party colleagues that the terms of reference to be drawn up for any new review of the interconnector would not include any further examination of why the line should be put underground. The undergrounding of the line was the policy Fianna Fáil local representatives at the time of last year’s general election had committed to, as indeed had Green Party representatives in Cavan/ Monaghan and Meath.
