As featured on the front page of last week’s Northern Standard, the National Transport Authority has awarded €3,985,620 to Monaghan County Council to complete a number of walking and cycling projects during 2021.

The funding marks the first year in a five year scheme aimed at supporting small local authorities such as Monaghan County Council to invest in urban walking and cycling infrastructure, to bring the level of infrastructure available in towns to a level where walking and cycling are attractive alternatives to the motor car for getting around town.

This is the heaviest investment in walking and cycling that the state has made in our rural towns and villages, and was flagged in last year’s Programme for Government, where an unprecedented 20% of the national budget for transport was ringfenced for walking and cycling. The reason that so much emphasis is being put on walking and cycling as forms of transportation is that they are seen as non-polluting transportation alternatives in a sector which is the secondlargest contributor…
