WATERWAYS IRELAND TELLS CO COUNCIL IT HAS “NO REMIT” TO EXTEND ULSTER CANAL REGENERATION BEYOND CLONES

The potentially transformative effects on the economic and social fabric of Clones of the realisation of the next phases of the Ulster Canal regeneration project were outlined by representatives of Waterways Ireland in an online engagement with the members of Monaghan Co Council on Tuesday.

But a statement by Waterways Ireland Director of Technical Services Joe McMahon that his organisation had no remit from the North-South Ministerial Council to “look at anything beyond Clones at this stage” dismayed councillors from the North Monaghan area who were anticipating future phases of the project to extend development to Monaghan Town and further into the Republic of Ireland.
