DEPARTMENT CONFIRMS NO PLANS FOR DIRECT PROVISION CENTRE IN BALLYBAY

The government Department responsible for integration has said there are no plans to convert the former Riverdale Hotel in Ballybay into a Direct Provision Centre for asylum seekers and refugees. This was also confirmed to Fine Gael Councillor Sean Gilliland, who had contacted Minister Roderic O’Gorman through the offices of Minister Heather Humphreys.

Speculation had developed locally in recent weeks and there were several comments on social media. It led to a public meeting being planned for Monday evening in Ballybay town park. This was subsequently cancelled after concerns had been expressed at a meeting of Ballybay Clones Municipal District that it would breach Covid-19 government restrictions on outdoor gatherings.
