MONAGHAN COUNCILLORS APOLOGISE FOR COVID-19 BREACHES AND PROMISE CO-OPERATION WITH SIPO PROBE

Monaghan Co Councillors Paudge Connolly and Cathy Bennett apologised at Monday’s meeting of the local authority for recent actions in breach of Covid-19 public health guidance and promised that they would cooperate fully with any future investigation by SIPO or the Standards In Public Office Commission. In statements made at the outset of Monday’s monthly Council meeting – again held in Monaghan Town’s Garage Theatre to facilitate social distancing and observance of other Covid-19 health and safety guidelines – both councillors were afforded time to make brief statements of apology, Councillor Connolly referring to his attendance at the Oireachtas Golf Society function in Clifden, Co Galway on August 19 and his participation eight days before in a golf competition in Alicante in Spain; and Councillor Bennett (who has had the Sinn Féin party whip removed from her) to going on a family holiday to Lanzarote from July 29 to August 9 and her subsequent decision to travel to a holiday home in Rossnowlagh, Co Donegal to self-isolate.
