Gardaí are to be given new powers to enforce new Covid-19 restrictions around social gatherings, particularly in restaurants or bars serving food, and in private homes. The move is part of a range of new measures designed to suppress the virus in the country. The reintroduction of restrictions on gatherings both indoors and outdoors was announced by An Taoiseach Micheál Martin TD after a marked increase in Covid cases in the past fortnight. In Co. Monaghan there were five confirmed new cases in the week up to midnight on Sunday and the county total revealed on Tuesday evening increased to 540, with an overall total of 27,500 cases in the Republic.

It was revealed on Monday that a non-playing member of Truagh Gaels GFC had tested positive at the weekend. All Club activities and the grounds were immediately closed for a number of days as a precaution…
