New local authority campaign seeks public support to keep Monaghan public amenities clean

“Be Clean, Keep It Green, Take Your Litter Home” is the mantra foregrounding a local authority campaign launched on Monday to enlist the public’s help in keeping popular public amenities throughout Co Monaghan in the pristine condition necessary for all to enjoy them. As the campaign got formally underway at a photo shoot in a resplendent Rossmore Forest Park in Monaghan Town, where the recently developed children’s play area was in busy use, Councillor Seamus Treanor, Cathaoirleach of the Monaghan Municipal District which is promoting the anti-litter message in collaboration with the Environmental Services Section of Monaghan Co Council, called on the users of Rossmore and other local amenities to unite to combat “the terrible scourge of litter louts who have no regard for our countryside”.

“We live in one of the most beautiful countries in the world and our own county of Monaghan is up there with the best,” Councillor Treanor stated. “We have over 400 lakes, rivers and streams and of course the little hills are a great tourist attraction. Anyone who comes here on short breaks cannot get over the beauty of the hidden gem of Co Monaghan. “Up to five million people visit Ireland every year, which gives a great boost to our economy and, of course, provides much needed jobs. But Co Monaghan, like every other county, suffers from the terrible scourge of litter louts who have no regard for our countryside.

“They come at all times of the day and night to dump often filthy and disgusting rubbish into our rivers and on laneways, into farmers’ fields and as far as the Rock Bog in North….
