Sinn Féin will press for radical changes in health service policy in order to advance the restoration and development of hospital services in Monaghan and other locations, Cavan/Monaghan Deputy Matt Carthy pledged this week. The Carrickmacross politician, who was this week appointed his party’s Frontbench Spokesperson on Agriculture and the Marine, was severely critical of the HSE over information which had emerged on the level of spending on agency staff in the Cavan/Monaghan Hospital Group, declaring that this exposed “the failings of Government health policy in this region”.

Deputy Carthy said the situation was all the more worrying in current circumstances as the dependency on agency staff placed hospitals on a precarious footing as they continued to address and emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic. “The 2019 figures have revealed a massive spend on agency staff to provide core services, spending that should be guaranteed. It is not acceptable that the health services of the people of Cavan and Monaghan are funded on such an ad hoc basis,” he stated.

“We entered this pandemic on the back of an existing crisis in our health service, exacerbated by the systematic removal of services from Monaghan Hospital over the past two decades.
