• Heather Humphreys and Catherine Martin appointed Ministers in historic FF/FG/Green Coalition

Co Monaghan has two women at the Cabinet table in the historic Coalition Government involving an alliance of Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the Green Party. Fine Gael Deputy for Cavan/Monaghan Heather Humphreys is the new Minister for Social Protection, Community and Rural Development, and the Islands. Carrickmacross native Catherine Martin, deputy leader of the Green Party and TD for the Dublin Rathdown constituency, was given the portfolio of Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht.

The new Cabinet was announced by FF leader Micheál Martin shortly after his election as Taoiseach at a sitting of Dáil Éireann in Dublin’s National Convention Centre on Saturday (see story inside on the formation of the new Government). Ms Martin’s brother Vincent P, a former member of Monaghan Co Council and current Green Party member of Kildare Co Council, was one of the eleven nominations to Seanád Éireann announced by the Taoiseach. Senior Counsel Mr Martin was a co-founder of the New Beginning group of lawyers which offered support and advice to people who encountered severe mortgage repayment…
