38 CO MONAGHAN WOMEN ACCESSED ABORTION SERVICES, DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH STATISTICS DISCLOSE

38 women who listed their address in Co Monaghan availed of termination of pregnancy services in Ireland last year, Department of Health statistics disclosed this week. In all, 6,666 terminations were performed in Ireland during the first year such services could be accessed legally following the repeal of the Eighth Amendment and the introduction of the relevant legislation in January 2019. 77 women with addresses in Co Cavan also accessed abortion services.

The vast majority of the abortions performed in Ireland last year were carried out during the early stages of pregnancy (6,500). 144 are recorded as being performed due to a risk to the live of the child or the mother.

The Department of Health also said that 67 women from Northern Ireland travelled to the Republic to avail of the service. The Pro Life Campaign said the impact of the repeal of the Eighth Amendment was very apparent in the abortion figures released by the Department.
