HEALTH MINISTER GIVES “ABSOLUTE AND UNEQUIVOCAL” COMMITMENT ON FUTURE OF CAVAN HOSPITAL MIDWIFERY UNIT

Minister for Health Simon Harris TD has given what has been described by his Cabinet colleague Heather Humphreys as an “absolute and unequivocal commitment” that the MLU or midwifery-led unit of the maternity services at Cavan General Hospital will remain in operation. The Minister confirmed his personal commitment and that of his Department to the future support of the Cavan MLU during a conference call with Cavan Hospital midwives and representatives of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation on Friday.

The meeting took place after fears emerged last week that the MLU could be downgraded or even closed as part of a planned restructuring of Cavan Hospital’s maternity services. Funding for a new Advance Midwife Practitioner at the hospital has also been approved. Deputy Humphreys, a Fine Gael TD for Cavan/Monaghan and Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation, also took part in Friday’s conference call.
