HUMPHREYS WELCOMES RE-OPENING OF SHOPS AS CORONAVIRUS RESTRICTIONS EASED

WIDER TRAVEL TO BE ALLOWED AT END OF JUNE

‘Summer is not lost’ was how the Taoiseach announced the accelerated easing of coronavirus restrictions following a Cabinet meeting last Thursday evening. He revealed that the government’s roadmap plan announced in April would be shortened from five phases to four phases, with travel restrictions throughout the Republic removed on Monday 29th June.

The immediate effect of the new guidelines could be seen on the streets of Monaghan town, Castleblayney, Carrickmacross, Clones and Ballybay on Monday. The number of people going about their business, some wearing face masks, appeared to be higher and there was a noticeable increase in traffic. Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation, Heather Humphreys TD, said it was a day for hope and optimism, but not complacency. She announced that the reopening of all shops had been brought forward following representations made by retailers, particularly those with outlets in shopping centres.

The Minister is reported to have made a very strong case for the complete re-opening of the retail sector. She insisted that now is the time to let people get back to work…
