As the country prepares for coronavirus restrictions to be further relaxed on Monday, a Monaghan doctor has urged caution as clusters of Covid-19 are still being detected in the county. The GP practice of Dr Illona Duffy in The Diamond detected six positive cases on Tuesday and two more yesterday morning. Interviewed on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Dr Duffy said her surgery in Co. Monaghan and some in Co. Cavan are seeing definite clusters of the virus.

She explained that cases are now emerging from workplaces such as factories, rather than nursing homes or hospital settings. She was careful to point out that it was not necessarily meat plants or related to food businesses which have been open since the start of the emergency.

The revelation of at least eight positive cases at the start of this week in just one GP practice in Co. Monaghan is of some significance. It comes at a time when it appeared from the official statistics for the previous week that the level of cases was decreasing. In six of the counties on the Republic, there were no cases…
