Monaghan man Declan McBennett has clocked up two years as head of sport at RTÉ, among over two decades at the national broadcaster, but even all that experience won’t have prepared him for the unique challenges posed by a 2020 sporting calendar left in disarray by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a wide-ranging chat, McBennett recognised the challenging landscape, while keeping things very much in context: “It has been difficult as there has been no sport, but it pales into insignificance when you see what is happening in wider society in terms of both the death toll and the impact this is having on family life and community and mental health.

Professionally, it is frustrating, but all these things have to be kept in context. Sport will come back strong and we will probably have a greater appreciation of sport when it does come back, but in the short term, the focus has to be on the public health.” McBennett took over as head of sport around the time of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and despite the difficulties…
