A man is in custody after being arrested by Gardaí conducting a Covid-19 patrol in Monaghan Town.
The Gardaí have reiterated the importance of the public adhering to the current health and social distancing requirements following the incident, which occurred on Tuesday afternoon.

A Garda statement said that, at approximately 5.30 pm on April 14, the Gardaí in Monaghan received a report of a group of people drinking in public. On arrival the Gardaí requested them to disperse and to go home.

The group complied and left the area, but one male in his thirties became very abusive and was asked three times to desist and to return home. He proceeded to cough into the faces of the Gardaí dealing with him.

He was subsequently arrested and brought to Monaghan Garda Station. While in Garda custody he assaulted a female member who sustained a minor facial injury that did not require medical attention.

The male was charged, brought to court and was remanded in custody.

The Garda statement concluded: “We cannot stress enough the seriousness of this public health crisis that we are currently going through and the importance of everyone adhering to the HSE guidelines.”
