‘THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM’

After the country had experienced a St Patrick’s Day without any public celebratuions, the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar TD took the unusual step of making a Ministerial announcement on RTÉ and Virgin Media television on Tuesday evening about the measures that were being taken to deal with the spread of coronavirus.

It was made under Section 112 of the Broadcasting Act, which allows broadcasting time for the government for announcements in the event of a major emergency. His address came after 69 new cases were confirmed in the Republic, bringing the overall number to 292.

Across the border in Northern Ireland, a further ten cases have been confirmed, bringing the total there to 62. Overall there are 354 cases on the island of Ireland.

The Taoiseach said it was believed that there could be 15,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in this jurisdiction by the end of the month. He said all the resources of the State, both financial and human, were being deployed to stop the spread of the virus. This is the text….
