GIVE SIPO POWERS TO PUNISH CORRUPT COUNCILLORS – CO COUNCIL CALL

The members of Monaghan Co Council voted overwhelmingly on Monday to ask the Government to give SIPO or the Standards in Public Office Commission powers to punish local authority members who contravened ethics legislation and their code of conduct.

The Council was considering the SIPO report on its investigation of alleged contraventions of the Ethics in Public Office Act and the Local Government Act by Monaghan Councillor Hugh McElvaney.

SIPO found that Councillor McElvaney had made four contraventions of the legislation governing the conduct of public representatives by offering assistance in return for financial reward. Its investigation was initiated following an RTÉ Investigates programme broadcast…
