The profound sadness being experienced in the Newbliss and wider Co Monaghan area this week at the passing of Sarah McGuigan, Lisnagore, echoed with deep poignancy among the staff of the Northern Standard newspaper. Sarah was this publication’s Newbliss News correspondent for close to four decades, and among the loyal ranks of this essential component of our newsgathering function she occupied a vaunted place for her reliability, diligence and sense of community.

The high regard with which Sarah was held in her native place, to which she gave so much in a variety of community causes, was matched by the esteem and affection she commanded in our newsroom, where the receipt of Sarah’s weekly copy would inevitably be closely followed by a phone call to check its delivery. Her vitality, sense of humour and easy rapport with people shone brightly in these weekly conversations with some or other of the editorial team, who this week are mourning the loss of a good and valued friend as well as one of our most long-serving and consistent contributors.

Sarah’s Funeral Mass will take place today, Thursday in St Laobhin’s Chapel, Killeevan at 1 pm, with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery. She is survived by husband Michael, sons Gareth and Mark, sisters Susan, Roseann and Margaret, and brother Owen.
