MINISTER RESPONDS TO CO COUNCIL ON CHILDCARE SECTOR INSURANCE COSTS

The entry of a second insurance provider into the arena of childcare in Ireland was emphasised by Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Katherine Zappone in correspondence to Monaghan Co Council circulated at the February meeting of the local authority – a subject given topical resonance with the national day of protest staged by the Irish early years sector two days later.

Minister Zappone was responding to an urgent business motion proposed by the Sinn Féin councillors at the January meeting of the Council and unanimously adopted.

This called on Minister Zappone, Minister for Finance and Public Expenditure Paschal Donohoe and Insurance Reform Minister Michael D’Arcy “to engage with all insurance providers in this State, and throughout the EU, to find those willing to cover insurance for childcare providers.

In the absence of an insurer willing to enter the market specifically for childcare/creche facilities, we call on Government to legislate for a State-run insurer to offer cover for the vital service offered by private….
