INTENSE BATTLE FOR FIVE SEATS AS POLLING DAY APPROACHES IN CAVAN MONAGHAN

As voters in Cavan Monaghan go to the polls along with the rest of Ireland on Saturday, the general election is shaping up to be one of the most important in the history of the state. After nine years of Fine Gael in government preceded by fourteen years of Fianna Fáil led administrations, the national opinion polls are showing a trend towards Sinn Féin.

The latest Red C survey for the Sunday Business Post showed the party level with Fianna Fáil, each of 24%, and ahead of Fine Gael on 21%. But that support which appears to be evident amongst young voters and those aged 35-54 will not necessarily translate proportionately into Dáil seats. Sinn Féin has a total of 42 candidates; Fianna Fáil are running 84 and Fine Gael 82 to contest 159 seats.
