DETECTIONS INCREASE AS MONAGHAN GARDAÍ TIGHTEN THE NET ON DRUG-DRIVING OFFENDERS

An increasing number of Co Monaghan motorists who drive after using illicit drugs are being apprehended by the Gardaí, it was evident from statistics presented to Tuesday’s meeting of Co Monaghan Joint Policing Committee. Garda Chief Superintendent John O’Reilly, referring to crime detections in the county during the third quarter of this year, said that in the Monaghan Garda District drink driving incidents had dropped but there had been an increase in the numbers of those arrested for drug driving.

In the Carrickmacross District there was a slight drink driving reduction but a significant drug driving increase. Statistics circulated at the meeting showed that 20 drivers had been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol during the third quarter of 2019 in the Monaghan District, compared to 29 for the same period last year.
