CHRISTMAS BOOST FOR CARRICKMACROSS AS GROUND RENTS LEGISLATION FINALISED

It’s a nice Christmas present for the businesses from one side of the main street in Carrickmacross. Over many years they have been paying ground rents to a semi-absentee English landlord, whose relatives were given the land by Queen Elizabeth I in the 16th century. The longawaited ground rents legislation that will give these leaseholders the opportunity to acquire the freehold of their business premises reaches the final stage in the Oireachtas this afternoon (Thursday).

Following the expected final agreement by the Seanad, the legislation will be sent to the President for enactment, hopefully before the end of the year. The Dáil was told last week (see below) the present situation arose from an archaic law that placed a huge burden…
