Cavan Monaghan Dáil deputy Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin last week hosted a special appearance before the Oireachtas Justice and Equality Committee by Emma deSouza, the young Derry woman who has been forced to recourse to the courts in an effort to affirm her Irish citizenship and to challenge the British authorities who claim that people born in the north of Ireland are British, irrespective of how they view themselves and despite the fact that the Good Friday agreement states that people born in the north of Ireland can identify and be accepted as “British or Irish or both.”

Deputy Ó Caoláin secured the support of his committee to address the DeSouza case, recognising that the implications, and the political fallout from an adverse result, would be devastating for the entire nationalist and republican community…
