LIVERPOOL INCIDENT LEAVES MALACHY McCRUDDEN (56) WITH BROKEN LEG AND SEVERE BRUISING

A 56-YEAR-OLD North Monaghan man who runs his own haulage business was severely injured during a vicious earlyhours attack in Liverpool on Tuesday of last week, after he confronted a group of men in balaclavas who appeared to be trying to break into his trailer to rob it. Father-of-three Malachy Mc- Crudden had been sleeping in the cab of his Scania truck in an industrial estate in the Knowsley area, near Toxteth, when at about 3am he heard noises around the truck. Having jumped out to see what was happening he found himself confronted by four masked men who had been trying to get into the refrigerated trailer.

The trailer contained a full load of sealants, bonding and adhesive-type products that were due to be delivered to a nearby warehouse later that morning. Initially, it appeared to the lorry driver that the men were getting back into their small car to drive away, but then one of them reversed the vehicle back towards Mr McCrudden. This happened on two occasions, and the driver — who was the only one who spoke and had a distinctive Liverpool accent — had shouted something like, “Kill the bastard”.

Speaking to the Northern Standard yesterday, Malachy recalled how as he got back into his cab he saw the same man take a heavy steel or iron nailbar/ tyre lever from the car before coming at him. He tried to close the passenger door but the man used the bar to break….
