“It would be an ideal Christmas present for everybody in Carrickmacross, not just businesses (if the legislation is finally out through).” With those comments the Sinn Féin Deputy for Cavan Monaghan and Chair of the Oireachtas Justice and Equality Committee Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD brought yesterday’s proceedings to a close. The committee successfully amended a Bill aimed at making it possible for certain businesses in Carrickmacross that pay ground rents to acquire freehold title in their properties from their landlord, the Shirley estate.

Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation Heather Humphreys TD stood in for the Minister of Justice, Charlie Flanagan TD. She explained that this legislation would have an impact right across the country, not just in County Monaghan. It was aimed….
