DEATH OF PEACE CAMPAIGNER AND FORMER NORTHERN STANDARD COLUMNIST FR DES WILSON

Tributes from across the religious and political spectrum have been paid to west Belfast priest Fr Des Wilson, a noted campaigner and commentator on peace and human rights issues whose death at the age of 94 was announced on Tuesday. During the 1980s Fr Wilson had a close association with the Northern Standard newspaper and wrote a weekly opinion column that often provoked debate and occasionally controversy as he gave his considered analysis of the political, social and moral issues at the centre of discourse in Northern Ireland and the Border region during the period of the Troubles.

His views sometimes brought him into conflict with his own Catholic Church and he eventually resigned from clerical positions and devoted himself to community activity, being a particularly strong advocate of the value of adult education and the need to provide educational opportunities to…
