Plans paused for converting former
Council yard into artists’ studios

An ambitious plan by Monaghan County Council to convert a former Council building in Newbliss into a space for artists’ studios and residences in association with the Tyrone Guthrie Centre at nearby Annaghmakerrig House has been put on hold. A meeting on Monday of Ballybay Clones Municipal District was informed about important issues delaying the project. The proposal which was subject to grant approval from the government was jointly launched amidst much publicity in August last year by the Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation, Heather Humphreys TD and her Cabinet colleague, Josepha Madigan TD, Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. Both Ministers visited the Tyrone Guthrie artists’ retreat. There they reviewed expansion plans including a new rehearsal space and upgrading of the dance studio, as well as the Centre’s kitchen.

An investment of €300,000 was announced in the presence of the Tyrone Guthrie Chair, Adrian Moynes. Minister Madigan went on to reveal that in the light of the success of the facility….
