Sinn Féin MEP Matt Carthy has welcomed a response from European Commission Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier that the EU will not accept any further dilution to the withdrawal agreement reached last week with the British government. Mr Barnier was responding to questions from Mr Carthy and his party colleague Martina Anderson MEP, during a dialogue with the Left political grouping in the European Parliament on Tuesday.

In response to issues raised by the Sinn Féin representatives, Michel Barnier stated unequivocally: “There will be no veto – we will stay tough on that.” This was just a short time before the House of Commons voted by a margin of thirty in favour of the withdrawal agreement, but then rejected the timeframe proposed by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. There is speculation the EU is now set to grant an extension of a further three months to the Brexit process, until the end of January 2020.
