Cavan/Monaghan Fianna Fáil Senator Robbie Gallagher said this week that confirmation of two additional limited stop services from Bus Eireann was welcome – but significant issues remained with the service on Route 32 Letterkenny-Dublin and back, serving Monaghan. Senator Gallagher said he was told of the new services after he had contacted the company with regard to the complaints of constituents.

“Local people have complained of an “abysmal service” provided by Bus Eireann on Route 32, where the bus scheduled to arrive in Castleblayney at 17.40 arrived a full hour late at 18.40, by which time some of those waiting had found it necessary to make other arrangements. Other passengers have stated that the bus is frequently an hour late. On other occasions it is full and although alternatives were offered they resulted in passengers missing trains or appointments.

“In this day and age when we are supposed to be encouraging people to use public transport to reduce emissions, the people of rural Ireland deserve better. “However, Bus Eireann has confirmed that on Sunday 27th of October the company will launch two additional limited stop services in each direction as the first step on an improvement plan. The 00.30 and 03.30 departures from Letterkenny will address customer demand for early morning services to Dublin Airport and the 15.45 and 21.45 departures from Busáras (16.05 and 22.05 from Dublin Airport) will aim to address demand for late afternoon and evening return trips to Letterkenny.”

In a communication sent to Senator Gallagher, the company apologised for the disappointing customer experiences related to them on behalf of constituents and have promised to investigate this and address any underlying issues that caused delays. The company has explained that they recognise the capacity challenges on Route 32 overall and are committed to improving services. They are prioritising the launch of these particular services to address the periods of greatest customer demand but continue to evaluate the launches of other potential additional services on this route.
