POSITIVE PROGRESS REPORTED ON SECOND PHASE OF ULSTER CANAL GREENWAY PROJECT

The next phase of development of the Ulster Canal Greenway, which will link Smithboro in Co Monaghan to Middletown in Co Armagh, was planned to be completed and open by the end of 2020, Project Manager Anthony Morrow told the September meeting of Monaghan Co Council. Mr Morrow informed councillors that €4.9 million in INTERREG funding had been secured for this cross-Border project, which would provide 22 km of greenway along with an additional 2 km along the Monaghan Town by-pass.

An integrated design team had been appointed in June who had carried out a constraints review. Public consultation on route options was commencing in Smithboro and this would progress to Tyholland and Middletown later in the month. Mr Morrow hoped local landowners, community representatives and other interested parties would offer feedback on the options on the table.
