There was a need for more housing provision in Co Monaghan to cater for people living on their own, Sinn Féin councillor Colm Carthy stated at the September meeting of Monaghan Co Council. It was the view of some members that there was need for an affordable housing scheme in the county. At present Co Monaghan does not fit the criteria for the operation of the scheme.

The issue of affordable housing and a number of other dimensions of accommodation provision were addressed in a comprehensive written answer to a question submitted by Fianna Fáil’s Aoife McCooey. Councillor Carthy said there was a huge number of families having to rent under the HAP or Housing Assistance Payment scheme in Co Monaghan.
